• WWW stands for the worldwide web.
  • The worldwide web was developed in 1989 by TIM BERNERS LEE of the European particle physics lab (CERN) in Switzerland.
  • TIM BERNERS LEE invented the WWW in 1989, about 20 years after the first the connection was established over the internet.
WWW is a set of program, and protocols that allow the text, images, animations, audios, videos to be stored and accessed and linked together in the form of web sites.

FEATURES OF WWW (world wide web)


WWW is a set of protocols that allows to access any document on the internet through the naming system based on a uniform resource location (URL). It is a mechanism that links together information stored on many computers.

Hyperlinks:-

  • The webpage of a website contains links to other web pages. these links are called hyperlinks.
  • When a user clicks on a hyperlink, the linked web page or document is displayed.
  •  A hyperlink allows users to jump to related information.

Easier navigation:-

  • Web pages contain hypertext and hyperlinks which makes it easier for the user to navigate/move around a site. Web browsers also enable users to view and navigate web pages very easily.

Distributed:-

  • The WWW is a collection of millions of files stored on thousand of computers called web servers all over the world. Thus information is distributed globally on thousands of web servers.

Supports all protocol:-

  • A flow of information is controlled by a protocol. The WWW uses HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) for the transfer of information but it also supports many other protocols like FTP (file transfer protocol), Gopher, Telnet, etc. It is a part of the internet.

  • With the help of the web, people can conduct their business online.
